About Joshua Tree National Park

Resting in the southeastern area of sunny California, the Joshua Tree National Park is one of the state's most expansive and intriguing natural parks. In 1994, Congress passed a bill that offered protection and recognition to this desert area. Previously considered a landmark and monument, the Joshua Tree area became a national park after the bill was passed.

The area received its name from a scattering of Joshua tree forests that reside within the desert region. Spreading out over 790,000 acres, Joshua Tree National Park runs along the San Bernardino County area, the Mohave Desert, and the Colorado Desert. It is governed by the National Park service and is home to numerous wildlife, plants, and rocky regions. California junipers, native pine trees, scrub oaks, yucca, and Saltbrush are amongst the most common plant species in the park.

A total of nine campgrounds are available to the public for camping. Hiking, photography, and rock climbing are also activities that visitors to the park have available to them. Massive grasslands, extreme desert landscape, and mountainous boulders make the park a rugged and diverse region to explore nature in its most primitive and organic form.

The park was once home to hopeful gold miners who traveled throughout its vast territory in search of minerals and gold. Currently, class field trips and family trips seek out the Joshua Tree National Park to explore geological wonders. Many different elements of nature can be explored and experienced when a person takes a weekend trip through the massive park. Hiking excursions and guided tours are provided by park officials.

With three different ecosystems, the Joshua Tree National Park is an excellent place for people to gain first-hand experience with nature at its finest.
